We began this blog for several reasons. First, we wanted a platform to offer my new book, “Off Grid and Underground”. I wrote this book because of the huge interest that has developed since we built our home out of two 40 foot shipping containers buried underground. I wanted to share the ideas and techniques that went into building this comfortable and efficient home for those who may want to construct a similar design.
The second reason for this blog is that there are always improvements in materials and techniques, and I wanted a forum on which to be able to continue to present these updates. The book, “Off Grid and Underground” is full of ideas, but there will always be updates to improve on the design. 10 years from now, we will know more about how to build it than we do now.
Another reason for this blog is that many of you will have ideas or experiences that will contribute to our understanding and growth. I want there to be a continual flow of ideas both ways so we can all benefit. The synergy that can develop here has great possibilities, and I encourage each one of you to join in.
In 2000, my wife and I started with a bare piece of land and began to put together a home and small 10 acre homestead. It has been a steep learning curve, and we have made a lot of mistakes. The book and this blog are our effort to share our experiences with you so that you don’t have to make the same mistakes. We want you to benefit from our experience and have better results that don’t take so much time and expend so many resources. It’s been said that experience is the best teacher…. As long as it’s someone else’s experience!
We invite you to come along for the ride and see if there is anything here to benefit you and you to share with us. Enjoy.
